You don't actually need any special equipment to improve your balance.
Standing on the floor and practising simple balance exercises can be incredibly effective. (The Balance Compass is one of my favourite floor based balance exercises).
You can make them easier or harder by changing your stance, closing your eyes, or adding head movements.
However, I also find that some balance tools make training a little more enjoyable and more like play than exercise. Now, I don't know about you, but to me, when something is more enjoyable, I'm more likely to stick with it.
The seven tools I cover are listed below. If you want more information on these, I have linked them to the appropriate sites where possible:
- Balance Disc
- Balance Pad
- SlackBlock
- Kinesis Board
- Solemate
- Bosu Ball (There are cheaper versions around like this one)
- Slack Board
In the video, I explain:
- What each tool is
- What I like (and don't like) about each one
- Who I think they're best suited for
- My overall rating out of five
Whether you're looking to improve your balance, strengthen your feet and ankles, reduce your falls risk, or simply add a bit more variety to your exercise routine, this video will help you decide whether any of these tools are worth considering.
