One of the things that research has shown that can be beneficial for migraine and headache sufferers, is you can try is wearing glasses with a special lens. In particular, it is called a FL-41 tint.
They were first described in a research project in England in the early 1990’s. This study was looking at kids with migraine headaches and found that wearing the FL-41 lenses improved the light sensitivity in these children and lessened the frequency and intensity of their migraines.
In an article in Current Neurology and Neuroscience Reports from 2018 titled “Photophobia: When light hurts, a Review”, they talk about these FL-41 tint lens.
What they said was that the FL-41 tint “filters 80% of short wavelengths of 50 or 60 Hz found in fluorescent lights”, and that “these short wavelengths are known to trigger migraines more than other wavelengths”. In the review, they also said that this tint has been found to reduce migraine frequency and decrease photophobia. They concluded that FL-41 tint lenses should be considered as a treatment option for patients suffering from photophobia between migraine attacks or if their attacks are triggered by light.
A more recent study from the Journal of Ophthalmology earlier this year, found that the FL-41 lenses modulated light sensitivity symptoms in some people, and decreased activation in some brain areas involved in processing different types of pain.

The Neurolux Duo comes is a two-pair set, one for daily wear to prevent migraines and another pair with a darker tint to help soothe active migraines.
This is what their information says: “Neurolux FL-41 glasses filter the light waves that cause and increase the severity of migraines and headaches, typically triggered by LED, fluorescent lights, and electronic screens. Wear it with or without prescription during headache-triggering tasks”.
Here are my thoughts on the glasses.
Firstly, the glasses feel well made and fit me really well and are comfortable to wear.
Luckily, I am not a migraine sufferer, but I am prone to headaches and when I do have a flare up, I find that I can get a little sensitive to light, especially things like the sun flashing on a car window or something like that.
Since I have had these glasses, I have only had one flare up of my headaches and this is when I tried the darker tint glasses. The glasses actually felt quite good and helped with my light sensitivity at the time. I do wear prescription glasses and the ones I were supplied with were not my prescription, so I didn’t wear them that long.
In the future, this is something that I would consider getting made in my prescription so I could wear them longer when I am in the middle of a flare up. I will continue to try them out when I have another flare up of my headaches.
I do see a few migraine sufferers in the practice, so I am going to let them try these glasses for a while and I will make a follow up blog post letting you know how they found them. I will also update you on how I have found the glasses with more use.
