Every year on October 16, people from around the world join together to raise awareness on World Spine Day as part of the Bone and Joint Decades Action Week.  The theme for 2014 is “Straighten Up and Move”, focusing on the importance of proper posture and movement in maintaining good spinal health.

To raise awareness on World Spine Day, and in accordance with the “Straighten Up and Move” theme, the organizers of the World Spine Day are asking people to take a photo of their spine and share via social media using #worldspineday and #spineselfie.  Photos can be shared on the world Spine Day Facebook, Twitter (@world_spine_day) page or via email info@worldpsineday.org.

Spinal disorders, such as back pain, neck pain, scoliosis and disc disease, to name a few, are common.  They can have a profound effect on a person’s overall health, impacting a person’s ability to work, to enjoy everyday activities and even disrupting healthy sleep patterns.

The important thing with these types of problems is that they can be preventable.  Maintaining a healthy spine with appropriate stretches and exercises is a great way of staying in good shape and hopefully preventing these problems in the future.

If you are suffering from back or neck pain, is it time to make some changes? Does your posture need changing? Do you need to do more stretches? Do you need to move more?  Make World Spine Day the start of something new.  Your body will thank you for it.

For more information on World Spine Day, visit the website www.worldspineday.org. There are some great stretches and exercise programs on the website.
